A Small Town Christmas returns to the North Carolina Foothills

Rutherfordton - November 13, 2018: Every year the small town of Rutherfordton makes celebrating Christmas magical!

Festivities begin with the Rutherford Town Revitalization (RTR) Holiday Market at the newly-opened Shoppes Under Main in downtown Rutherfordton on Saturday, December 1, 2018 from 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. This event will include unique, handcrafted gifts and one-of-a-kind products from over 12 local vendors and artists.

Free "Pictures and Candy Canes" with Santa will take place from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. in beautiful Main Street Park provided by Willow Ridge Rehabilitation & Living Center. Santa and his sleigh will head to the neighboring town of Spindale for the Christmas parade set to begin at 3:30 p.m. and will return to Rutherfordton at 5:00 pm where the parade continues down Main Street.

This family-friendly occasion will showcase holiday-themed floats and horses, festive performances from local high school marching bands, cheerleaders and dance teams, and of course our guest of honor, Santa Claus and his sleigh!

The historic Bechtler House Heritage Center, located just off Main Street on 130 W. 6th Street, is also hosting a Christmas Open House from 2:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. featuring German food, drink, music and tours of the 1838 home. Special exhibits of Bechtler coin and knife collections will also be on display.

Immediately following the parade in Rutherfordton, the annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony of the 72-ft Cedar tree is next on the evening's schedule with Santa joining attendees on the Rutherford County Courthouse lawn. The majestic tree set against the town's illuminated Main Street creates a beautiful, holiday backdrop complimented with live music from the Old 74 Jazz Band, hot chocolate, sweet treats and concessions from vendors. The Christmas Tree lighting begins with a welcome from Mayor Jimmy Dancy to kick off the celebration, followed by awards presented to parade winners and the officer of the year award. Then, the First Baptist Church Handbell Choir will perform with Old 74 Jazz Band just before the magic of the large cedar tree is lit.

All guests are encouraged to join in with the singing of carols to enhance the Christmas spirit. Students at Rutherfordton Elementary School will be leading us in your holiday favorites. The night will end with more jazz music and enchanting moments as it begins to look a lot like Christmas in the small town of Rutherfordton.
